Learning Model II is treated as skill building that takes sustained practice on real problems, compared by Argyris to learning a middling game of tennis: participants slow down, redesign episodes from their cases, help each other craft new conversations and learn from the flaws in their own suggestions, and practise in actual business meetings with time set aside to reflect, supported at first by a facilitator acting like a coach who is later replaced by the group. New conversations pass through stages, first still Model I, then hybrids, then Model II, with the reasoning behind each discussed.
