Recovery runs in three phases that may overlap. Immediate recovery includes coordinating medical help and life safety, identifying and accounting for everyone who was on site (employees, visitors, customers, vendors), and keeping staff, relatives, the public and journalists informed. The short-term stage covers opening an EOC where required for incident management and continuity; preserving the crime scene and, once police allow, having trained professionals clean up and stabilize it to lessen psychological impact; watching response staff for signs of trauma and, where practical, providing quiet areas with drinks for evaluation and stress relief; activating the family notification and reunification center with enough resources such as the EAP, including information on survivors taken to hospital; helping evacuees and witnesses reach the center to contact family and assist police; giving affected people information on stress reactions, coping and resources such as crisis lines and the EAP; and, as soon as possible, reviewing planned communications and events to share information and show sensitivity, for example a new web landing page or banner with emergency contacts, continuity and donation information, a recorded telephone hotline, electronic message boards or signs, and rescheduling planned advertising, newsletters, emails, social media and special or festive events. The long-term stage covers a formal debrief with emergency managers from inside and outside and with key stakeholders; information about counseling, in groups or one to one, and how to get it, with services pre-arranged for anniversaries; supporting business continuity plans, including damage assessment and restoring operations sustainably; replenishing emergency supplies and kits; and communications at anniversaries and after similar local or national incidents.
