While the incident is going on the organization should think about: the role of first responders and trained staff in actively triaging people for shock and trauma once it is safe, ideally in a space away from the incident that limits what people see and hear, where they can be given drinks, warm coverings and calm to begin re-engaging with their surroundings; and monitoring all critical incident responders for signs that they need to step back briefly to recover, since high stress can impair thinking and judgment and thus the quality of their response.
