Organizations should prepare the workforce by explaining in advance how traumatic events affect people, which reduces some effects during the event and helps later recovery, and should identify trained community mental health providers who can give mental first aid and trauma counseling afterwards, since early connection makes support more likely to be accepted. Preparation should include: mental first aid training for emergency responders and people in positions of responsibility (managers, supervisors, teachers, administrators, peer counselors); training on trauma effects such as distorted perception or disorientation, shock, fear and slowed reactions; and training on countering them by watching for negative emotional and psychological signs, moving people away from busy areas, helping them focus on breathing with fewer visual distractions, giving water, juice or sports drinks, and helping them keep warm. This education should be given both verbally and in writing.
