If the organization decides to part company with a person of concern, as employee or business partner, it should involve key stakeholders in planning a considered, respectful and safe separation, recognizing that ending the relationship may not end the risk. Strategies may include: advice from a qualified threat assessment professional on the separation plan and how the meeting is run; offering an outcome, possibly a separation package, meant to promote safety and to be fair and respectful; following established practice, policies and procedures on violence concerns, with legal advice on compliance; short- and long-term security measures where appropriate; deciding what information will be given in future to outside parties asking about the former party; and keeping watch for conduct that could put the organization and its staff at risk.
