A first-time adopter can leave business combinations before the transition date as accounted for under the previous GAAP. If it elects to restate one, it must restate every combination after that one and apply AASB 10 from the same date, with the measurement of any affected items following AASB 3 and AASB 10. Goodwill and fair value adjustments arising in pre-transition combinations need not be retranslated under AASB 121; if not retranslated they are treated as assets and liabilities of the acquirer rather than the acquiree, and any retranslation election is applied either to all pre-transition combinations or to all restated ones.
