Parts 380 and 383: Entry-level driver training and commercial driver's license standards – US Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (49 CFR Parts 350 to 399)

US Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (49 CFR Parts 350 to 399) 383.71-155: CDL classes, endorsements and restrictions, knowledge and skills testing standards, medical certification status on the CDL record and the CLP and CDL document requirements (383.71 to 383.155)

What does 383.71-155 require?

A driver must hold a CDL of the class matching the vehicle (Class A combination vehicles over 26,001 pounds GCWR with a towed unit over 10,000 pounds, Class B single vehicles over 26,001 pounds, Class C smaller vehicles carrying 16 or more passengers or placarded hazmat) and the endorsements the operation requires (T double or triple trailers, P passengers, N tank vehicles, H hazardous materials with the TSA security threat assessment, X tank and hazmat, S school bus), subject to restrictions such as the air brake, manual transmission and intrastate-only restrictions. The driver must pass the knowledge and skills tests of Subparts G and H in a representative vehicle, hold a commercial learner's permit for at least 14 days before the skills test, and (for non-excepted interstate drivers) keep a current medical examiner's certificate on file with the State Driver Licensing Agency so the CDL record shows certified status (383.71(h), 383.73(o)); lapse of the medical certification downgrades the CDL. The CDL document must carry the 383.153 information and the State must meet the 383.155 tamper-proofing standard.
