US Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (49 CFR Parts 350 to 399) 380: Entry-level driver training: theory and behind-the-wheel curricula from a provider on the Training Provider Registry before a first Class A or B CDL, upgrade or endorsement, and LCV driver training and certification (380.101 to 380.725)

What does 380 require?

Since February 7, 2022 a driver applying for a first Class A or Class B CDL, an upgrade from B to A, or a first school bus, passenger or hazardous materials endorsement must complete the entry-level driver training of Part 380 Subpart F from a provider listed on FMCSA's Training Provider Registry, covering the theory curriculum (with an 80 percent assessment score) and the behind-the-wheel range and public road curriculum (to proficiency) in Appendices A to E, before the State administers the skills test (or knowledge test for the hazmat endorsement). Training providers must meet the eligibility, instructor, facility, vehicle and record requirements of Subpart G, register and self-certify, retain records for three years and submit driver completion data to FMCSA. Longer combination vehicle drivers must complete the LCV training and hold the certificate of Subparts B to E, with instructors qualified under 380.301 and employers keeping the certificates (380.401).
