If the consumer disputes the debt or any part in writing inside the thirty days, or asks for the original creditor's name and address, the collector must stop collecting the debt or the disputed part until it has obtained and mailed verification or a judgment copy, or the original creditor details. Collection activity that does not otherwise violate the Act may continue during the thirty days unless such a notice is received, but no activity or communication in that period may overshadow or contradict the disclosed consumer rights. A consumer's failure to dispute is not an admission of liability. Formal pleadings and tax, privacy and data-breach notices are not initial communications.
