Whoever offers a hazardous material marks each package, freight container and transport vehicle as Subpart D requires: on non-bulk packages the proper shipping name and identification number (with the UN or NA prefix), technical names for n.o.s. entries, the consignee or consignor name and address for certain modes, orientation arrows on liquids in combination packagings, and the specific markings for limited quantities, marine pollutants, hazardous substances (RQ), poisonous materials (inhalation hazard), elevated temperature materials (HOT), lithium batteries and packages of Class 7 material. Markings must be durable, in English, printed on the surface or firmly attached to it, unobscured and in contrasting colour. Bulk packagings (portable tanks, cargo tanks, tank cars, other bulk packagings) must display the identification number on orange panels, placards or white square-on-point displays on each side and end as 172.326 to 172.338 prescribe, with specific markings for petroleum sour crude oil and for cargo tanks of certain materials.
