UK ICO Guidance on Video Surveillance including CCTV (2022) T.2: T.2 Body worn video: DPIA, recording switched on only when justified, audio and video controlled separately, people told, secure devices and storage policy

Body worn cameras record close up in homes, shops and transport and are more intrusive than fixed CCTV, so their use needs justification and a DPIA. Continuous recording needs strong justification; pre-event buffering should not be excessive; audio needs its own justification and sensitive settings (homes, schools, care homes) need more; audio and video should ideally be controlled independently. Wearers should announce recording and why before switching on, use indicator lights or signage, or point to the privacy notice. Devices should be secure (encryption, no removable cards), and a storage policy must set the shortest retention and disposal, with footage retrievable by person or event, sharing agreements and redaction capability.
