Before processing, the information officer must by notice require the prescribed request fee (R100 for public bodies); where search and preparation would exceed six hours, a deposit of up to one third of the access fee, the notice stating the amount and the requester's rights to internal appeal, complaint or court and the procedure. Deposits are repaid if the request is refused, records are withheld until fees are paid, and access fees cover prescribed reproduction costs and search and preparation time beyond the first hour (R100 per hour, capped at R300). Wilfully or grossly negligently charging a non-prescribed fee is an offence.
