Each discipline can be thought of at three levels: practices (what you do, the focus of a beginner's conscious effort), principles (the guiding ideas behind the practices, such as structure influences behavior or the power of vision) and essences (how those far along in mastery simply are, which cannot be aimed at directly). Mastery needs the principles to be understood and the practices to be followed, since intellectual understanding is not learning. Shared vision and team learning are collective in their practices, principles and essences. Learning moves through stages: new cognitive capacities (seeing and speaking a new language), new action rules tried experimentally, and finally new values and operating assumptions enacted under stress in one's own voice.
