Five component disciplines converge to make learning organizations possible: team learning, mental models, personal mastery, shared vision and systems thinking. A discipline is a body of theory and technique studied and practised over a lifetime, not an enforced order or a model to copy from best-practice firms, and these are personal disciplines about how we think, what we want and how we interact. They must develop together: systems thinking is the fifth discipline because it welds the others into one consistent whole of theory and practice, while it in turn needs shared vision for long-term commitment, mental models for openness, team learning for the larger picture and personal mastery for the motivation to see how our actions shape the world. Leaders sequence their development deliberately, usually vision, values and purpose with systems thinking and mental models early and personal mastery later, guarding against reliance on any single discipline.
