At the employer's own expense each workplace has the first aid supplies and services Part 9 requires, readily available during working hours. A competent person, consulting the committee, representative or workers, assesses the first aid risks (hazards, severity and likelihood of injury, workplace characteristics, shift numbers, incident history, distance to first aiders and emergency medical services, work patterns, transport to medical care and special needs) and the employer sets the kit classification, supplies and services from it, reviewing the assessment as Part 9 requires. The employer designates one or more workers at every workplace to act as first aiders, each holding a valid Basic, Intermediate or Advanced certificate matched to the assessed risk level, and equips vehicles and boats carrying workers with an intermediate kit sized to seating capacity. Workers use the first aid provided and report injuries to the employer or supervisor as soon as practicable; first aiders prepare a written treatment record for each injury; supplies are kept clean, dry and stocked; a sign shows kit locations and the first aiders' names; and a first aid room is provided where the section 9.14 thresholds for higher-risk work and numbers are met. Hospitals, nursing homes and the other workplaces section 9.2 names are exempt.
