Applies to conveyors used in construction. A way to stop the motor or engine is provided at the operator's station, and a similar stop is also provided at the motor or engine when the operator's station is remote from it. Conveyor systems carry an audible warning that is sounded just before start-up. Emergency stop switches must be arranged so the conveyor cannot restart until the tripped switch has been reset to the run or on position. Screw conveyors are guarded so employees cannot touch the turning flights. Where a conveyor runs over work areas, aisles or thoroughfares, guards protect employees who have to work below it, and crossovers, aisles and passageways are conspicuously signed as Subpart G requires. During repairs, and whenever running the conveyor would endanger employees doing maintenance, it is locked out or otherwise made inoperable and tagged Do Not Operate. Every conveyor in service must follow ANSI B20.1-1957 (the safety code covering conveyors, cableways and similar equipment) for its design, build, inspection, testing, upkeep and use.
