OSHA Safety and Health Regulations for Construction (29 CFR Part 1926) 1926.553: 1926.553 Base-mounted drum hoists

Covers base-mounted drum hoists other than those used with derricks, which must instead meet 1926.1436(e). Moving parts that create a hazard, for example gears, protruding set screws, chains, cables, sprockets and rotating or reciprocating parts, must be guarded. Every control used in the normal operating cycle has to be easily reachable from where the operator stands. Electric motor driven hoists need three features: a device that disconnects all motors from the line on power failure and prevents restart until the controller handle is returned to off; an overspeed preventive device where applicable; and a means that stops remotely operated hoists whenever any control becomes ineffective. Each such hoist in service must satisfy what the manufacturer prescribes for its design, build, installation, testing, inspection, upkeep and operation, so the employer's practice has to follow the maker's manual. Paragraph (b), specific requirements, is reserved.
