OSHA Safety and Health Regulations for Construction (29 CFR Part 1926) 1926.104: 1926.104 Safety belts, lifelines, and lanyards

Lifelines, safety belts and lanyards are to be used only for safeguarding employees; any that has taken an in-service load (as opposed to static load testing) must be removed from service at once and never used again for safeguarding employees. Lifelines are tied off above the work point to an anchorage or structural member able to hold a dead weight of 5,400 pounds or more. On rock-scaling work, or where the lifeline could be cut or abraded, lifelines must be wire core manila rope of 7/8 inch or larger; for other uses, manila of 3/4 inch or larger (or an equivalent) with a breaking strength of at least 5,000 pounds. Safety belt lanyards must be 1/2-inch nylon or larger (or an equivalent), no longer than allows a fall of 6 feet, rated at a nominal 5,400 pounds breaking strength. Belt and lanyard hardware must be made of pressed or drop forged steel, cadmium plated to Federal Specification QQ-P-416 type 1 Class B, smooth and free of sharp edges, and all such hardware (other than rivets) must take a 4,000-pound tensile load without breaking, cracking or permanent deformation.
