Oregon adopts the federal excavation subpart, so the employer meets the specific excavation requirements for access and egress with ramps and ladders within 25 feet of lateral travel in trenches four feet or deeper, protection from vehicular traffic, falling loads and mobile equipment, hazardous atmosphere testing and emergency rescue equipment, water accumulation controls, stability of adjacent structures, loose rock and soil protection, daily and post-event inspections by a competent person and fall protection at the edges (1926.651, with the Oregon underground installation rule), and protects employees in excavations from cave-ins by sloping, benching, shoring or shielding designed under the rule's appendices or by a registered professional engineer, with soil classification, installation and removal of protective systems and materials and equipment requirements (1926.652).
