Except where another standard permits otherwise, where employees could fall six feet or further to a lower level the employer makes sure fall protection systems are in place, installed and put into effect to the criteria of 1926.502 and the Oregon fall restraint, warning line and safety monitoring rules. The employer confirms that walking and working surfaces are strong and structurally sound enough to carry employees before anyone works on them; protects every employee, at any height, against tripping into or stepping into or through a hole (skylights included) with covers or an equivalent (smoke domes and skylight fixtures count as covers only if they meet the cover strength criteria); protects employees at wall openings whose inside bottom edge is below 39 inches with a drop of six feet or more outside by guardrails, safety nets, personal fall arrest or fall restraint; and protects employees approaching excavations six feet or more deep that are not readily seen, or wells, pits and shafts of that depth, with guardrails, fences, barricades or covers.
