Providers of public electronic communications services and networks must erase or anonymise traffic data once no longer needed for transmission; may keep billing and interconnection data only until the bill can no longer lawfully be challenged; may use traffic data for marketing their own services or value added services only with the subscriber's consent after informing them of the data types and duration; and must restrict processing to staff handling billing, traffic management, enquiries, fraud detection, marketing or value added services. Location data other than traffic data may be processed only anonymised or with consent for a value added service, after informing users of the data type, purpose, duration and any third-party transmission, with withdrawal possible at any time and a simple free means to refuse per connection.
