An MCDA avoids lock-in by making sure it can move its data and applications between providers at low cost with minimal disruption: it can copy data into or out of a service over the network or by physically moving storage devices, and services allow migration of a stopped virtual machine instance or machine image (IaaS) or application components (PaaS) from one provider to another, together with the metadata describing component relationships and required infrastructure such as load balancing and firewall settings.
