Clause 7.5 to 7.7: People support, communications and travel – ISO/TS 22330:2018

ISO/TS 22330:2018 7.6.2: Make internal communication a visible leadership priority throughout the event

What does 7.6.2 require?

Communicating with the workforce ranks as a priority from the start and stays one through recovery and restoration; the organisation should address people's key needs and concerns as they evolve, gathering input and feedback as well as giving information, with top management visible and accessible and line managers facilitating dialogue, and the internal communications team ready to adapt. Within privacy and legal limits people are told what has happened (frequent accurate updates presenting known facts, quickly and honestly without over-reassurance, clarity on who is affected including contractors, partners, clients and the community, sensitive notification of a colleague's serious injury or death, and progress on injured or unaccounted colleagues); have threats to themselves or their families explained (safety first, concern for families and colleagues addressed, enough safety and technical information for personal risk assessment, assurance that belongings and personal information are protected); be told what action to take (clear practical advice with reasons, the support available and how to reach it, how the organisation will continue and what each person contributes, how to communicate with the organisation, the importance of everyone's role, and encouragement to take part in recovery); and are given a near-term and a longer-term view of goals (how the organisation is responding and where each person fits, what is being done for affected colleagues, realistic concerns about workload, responsibilities, projects and job security, and confident top management messages on decisions and long-term plans). Messages from top and line management should be aligned and updated as information changes; information should come from credible external and internal sources; media enquiries should be referred to a nominated trained representative and people shielded from media pressure; contractor and third-party organisations should be informed, ideally through a contractor liaison role; and top and line management should give ongoing feedback on the response and recognise contributions.
