Processing presents challenges that affect either the viability or accuracy of the ESI eventually produced or the ability to maintain provenance and chain of custody: data corruption, password protection, encryption, indexing problems, inadequate keyword searches and poor optical character recognition. Beyond reducing volume, processing has to be backed by defensible audit procedures and quality-control measures, including validation of the data and chain-of-custody documentation that tracks how files change as they pass through processing.
