Processing extracts the collected ESI and, where needed, converts it into forms better suited to review and analysis, making the data searchable and presentable for review. Its objectives include reducing the volume of data to be reviewed by methods ranging from removing system files and other material unlikely to matter, through filtering by date range, file type, metadata or keywords, to intelligent and predictive algorithms applied to the pre-processed text, and deciding how duplicates are handled; the processing methods are often agreed between the parties so that everyone shares an understanding of how the data will be handled and delivered in the later elements.
