Control: physical security for equipment rooms that house telecommunications facilities used for the telecommunications business should be designed, built and put in place. Purpose: to secure equipment rooms. Guidance: use physical and environmental controls such as access control systems, CCTV, alarms and protection from fire and harsh conditions. Put rooms where they are least exposed to natural disasters, intrusion, flooding (with raised floors, water barriers and drainage where the risk cannot be avoided) and strong electromagnetic fields (with shielding, and measures against interference where power equipment shares the room). House important facilities in a dedicated room with suitable protection. Stop floor, wall and ceiling materials from collapsing in earthquakes that can be foreseen, and build with non-combustible or fire-resistant materials. Deal with static electricity. Design ducts between areas so fire spreads slowly or not at all. Use fire suppression suited to equipment rooms, clean agent or inert gas systems for example. Shield data storage rooms and safes from electromagnetic interference and fire where needed. Fit automatic fire alarms and extinguishers in equipment rooms and air-conditioning plant rooms. Air-condition equipment rooms, using a system separate from the offices for rooms holding important facilities, and power HVAC controls from an uninterruptible supply.
