Any modification an EA makes to the transmitter is stated in that EA's required inputs and is taken out after testing. The evaluator builds each setup on good engineering practice and the instruments' real behaviour: single-photon detectors are chosen for clock rate, dead time and noise suited to the module, dark counts, afterpulses and jitter are accounted for in planning and analysis, and any correction for instrument non-ideality must be reasonable and must not defeat the EA's purpose. Where the transmitter only emits representative pulses when linked to a receiver, a receiver emulator (or the receiver under test) supplies triggers and timing, combined with the test signals through couplers or wavelength multiplexers.
