The organization should set up, manage, evaluate at regular intervals and prioritize its portfolio of innovation initiatives, or several portfolios, and make sure of the following: that the portfolio is aligned with, and contributes to, the innovation strategy and objectives; that initiatives inside and outside the portfolios are consistent with each other; that synergies are realized, including reuse and optimization of resources, technologies, platforms and processes; that there is a suitable balance between risk and return, between degrees of novelty and kinds of innovation, and across time and scope horizons; that overall progress and results are reported to top management and to relevant interested parties; and that the portfolios, the strategy and the objectives are improved and adjusted. A portfolio can mix initiatives that improve or extend what is offered today with new solutions aimed at new users, customers and markets.
