A project manager shall be appointed when development of the item begins (in a distributed development both the customer and each supplier of an element to be integrated appoint one); the project manager shall be given, per 5.4.2.7, the responsibility and authority to ensure the safety activities needed to achieve functional safety are performed and the standard's requirements are met; shall confirm that the organization has provided the resources for the functional safety activities per 5.4.2.5; and shall ensure that a safety manager meeting 5.4.4 has been appointed, a role the project manager may hold and whose tasks may be distributed to several persons according to the organization.
