Guidance that keeping business continuity effective means keeping the scope, roles and duties current; championing business continuity management inside the organization and, where fitting, with other interested parties; keeping the costs of business continuity under control; setting up and watching over arrangements for handling change and for succession within the BCMS; organising suitable staff training and awareness; and keeping programme documentation in proportion to the organization's size and complexity. Every part of the continuity arrangements, documentation included, is reviewed regularly, exercised as appropriate and updated, and is also reviewed and updated whenever the organization's context, structure, sites, staff, processes or technology change significantly, or when an exercise or an incident exposes a weakness. A recognised project management method can be used, and ways to keep continuity effective include following good practice, leading the exercise programme, coordinating regular review and updating (going back over, or redoing, the impact analysis and risk assessment), and making sure the procedures still meet what the response teams need.
