Prequalification gathers information on suppliers' capability and can apply go or no-go criteria; its requirements should be clearly established and take account of the sustainability risks related to the supplier's organization, using industry standards, codes of conduct and management systems (ILO standards as a mandatory criterion, for example), and the organization should decide whether to ask suppliers to sign a code or join an initiative considering the implications; self-declarations may suffice at this stage with audits, site visits and second- or third-party assessment later, the method being chosen according to an assessment of the risk that non-conformity would create; optional criteria can weight a shortlist; deselected suppliers should be notified and debriefed on where their credentials fall short.
