A record serves two purposes: proof of what the business did, and an asset of information. Whatever its structure or form, information can be treated as a record once it arises from, and is kept through, business work. Looking after records means making and keeping them where evidence is required, and acting so that they stay genuine, trustworthy, complete and usable while the business setting and the demands on them shift. Metadata is an essential part of every record, and records systems support the management.
