Recommendation No. 157 VIII: working time and rest periods (Paragraphs 31 to 43) – ILO Nursing Personnel Convention C149 (1977)

ILO Nursing Personnel Convention C149 (1977) R157 Para 38: Shift work: premium, 12-hour rest between shifts, no split shifts

What does R157 Para 38 require?

Shift work should carry a pay increase no lower than for shift work elsewhere in the country; nurses on shifts should have at least 12 hours of continuous rest between shifts; split shifts should be avoided. The Annex asks for shift, overtime and inconvenient hours to be shared equitably between permanent, temporary, full-time and part-time staff, with regard to individual circumstances, and for nursing hours to be organised on the need for nursing services rather than around other health personnel's work patterns.
