ILO Nursing Personnel Convention C149 (1977) R157 Para 21: Career prospects and grading

What does R157 Para 21 require?

Nursing personnel should have reasonable career prospects: a varied and open range of advancement and leadership positions in direct and supportive care, administration, education and research, with grading and pay that recognise greater responsibility, skill and judgement, and recognition for functions involving direct contact with patients and the public. The Annex asks for classification and pay scales that allow movement between levels, promotion on equitable criteria taking account of experience and ability, pay increases at every level with experience, encouragement to use their full knowledge with responsibilities reviewed so pay and promotion follow them, and, where nursing advancement is limited, access to studies for other health professions.
