Clause 6.3: Apply risk assessment techniques – IEC 31010:2019

IEC 31010:2019 6.3.1: 6.3.1 Applying techniques: overview

Techniques deepen insight into risk so that choices made under uncertainty are better founded, including whether and how to treat risk. They are used to identify risk, determine causes, sources and drivers and exposure, investigate control effectiveness and the effect of proposed treatments, understand consequences and likelihood, analyse interactions and dependencies and measure risk. Analysis may be descriptive or quantitative and may use rating scales. Method and output form must suit defined criteria, for example quantitative criteria need quantitative output with correct units. Mathematical operations are used only where the metrics permit, generally not on ordinal scales, and no precision is claimed beyond what data and methods support.
