Preservation takes in identification, handling, control of contamination, packaging, storage, transmission or transport, and protection. It applies to materials and components from outside and inside providers, from the moment they are received, through processing, and on to shipment and delivery to the customer or its acceptance. At planned intervals the organization checks the state of product in stock, of storage containers and of the storage environment, to find deterioration. An inventory management system gets the most out of inventory turns over time and makes sure stock is rotated, first-in-first-out for example. Product that is obsolete is controlled in the same way as nonconforming product. The customer's requirements for preservation, packaging, shipping and labelling are met.
