Traceability allows the organization to pinpoint clear start and end points for product that has reached the customer or the field and might contain nonconformities affecting quality or safety. For every automotive product the organization analyses the traceability requirements set internally, by customers and by regulation, and it develops and documents traceability plans scaled to the level of risk or the severity of failure to employees, customers and consumers. The plans set out the traceability systems, processes and methods for each product, process and manufacturing location, and they: allow nonconforming and suspect product to be identified and separated; meet the response times the customer and regulations require; keep documented information in a format that supports those response times; provide serial identification of individual products where the customer or regulations call for it; and carry traceability into externally provided products that have safety or regulatory characteristics.
