The authors operationalise the model with instruments. The Leader Adaptability and Style Inventory of 1974 (the LEAD instruments later) presents twelve situations and measures the leader's self-perceived style, style range and style adaptability, the last scored from minus 24 to plus 24 by weighting each chosen action by its probability of success under the theory; parallel forms collect subordinates' and superiors' or peers' perceptions, returned anonymously to someone outside the work group. The readiness instruments (a manager's rating form and a self-rating form) rate five ability and five willingness scales on eight-point scales mapped to R1 to R4; the leader behaviour scales rate the ten task and relationship dimensions; the Readiness Style Match rates one ability scale, one willingness scale and the four styles on the same form, and underpins contracting for leadership style.
