From the balcony the leader maps the system that produces the current results: its structures (roles, reporting lines, compensation, decision processes and how they reward behaviour), its culture (unwritten rules, stories, rituals, group norms and the way meetings run, all of which show who holds power) and its defaults (the habitual responses that worked in the past and now constrain adaptation). The status quo is elegant and tenacious because the organization is aligned to get the results it gets and its members assimilate and reinforce it; adaptive challenges show themselves as non-linear cause and effect, insufficient formal authority, conflicting factions and formerly successful practices that no longer serve. Sector context (non-profit consensus, private competition, public risk aversion) shapes adaptability. The chapter moves through why the status quo is so elegant and tenacious, what the structures imply, which cultural norms and forces are at work, and how to spot default interpretations and behaviour.
