Emotional intelligence competencies are learned and learnable, but through the brain's habit circuitry rather than the neocortex, so training programmes that teach concepts fail. The author's method: mobilise the person's own motivation by drawing on their vision of who they want to be; obtain 360-degree feedback on the EI competencies (the ESCI) with a trained consultant to choose which competency to strengthen; operationalise the goal as one specific behaviour with a plan for exactly what to do and when (turn away from the screen and give full attention when someone walks in); use every naturally occurring opportunity to practise, since the new habit competes with the old circuitry and needs three to six months of repetition before it becomes the default; and add mental rehearsal, which activates the same circuitry. Boyatzis's students showed competencies enhanced this way still rated strong by co-workers seven years later.
