Primal Leadership holds that the leader's emotional task comes first and matters most: the leader steers how the group feels, and because emotions spread from the leader, driving collective emotions toward enthusiasm produces resonance, which brings out everyone's best, while driving them toward rancour and anxiety produces dissonance, which undermines the emotional foundations that let people perform. How well the leader handles this primal side goes a long way, to a striking degree, toward deciding whether a group thrives or declines; the resonant styles are visionary, coaching, affiliative and democratic, and the dissonant styles pacesetting and commanding when misused.
