Three categories of safety case are distinguished: the generic product safety case (not tied to an application; for a product re-usable in different independent applications), the generic application safety case (for a family of applications sharing functions) and the specific application safety case (for one particular installation); the structure and the approval procedure are basically the same for all three, each specific application demonstrates that its environment and context of use fit the generic application conditions, and approval granted for a generic product or generic application by one safety authority should be capable of acceptance by other authorities (cross-acceptance), which is not regarded as possible for a specific application.
