A lawyer may accept payment for a client's representation from someone other than the client only where the client gives informed consent (which is implied, subject to revocation, when a third party contractually obliged to provide a defence retains the lawyer), where the payer does not interfere with the lawyer's independent judgement or the client relationship, and where information about the representation stays protected. A lawyer acting for several clients may not take part in an aggregate settlement of their claims, or an aggregated plea agreement in a criminal case, unless each client signs an informed consent after being told about all the claims or pleas involved and each person's share in the settlement; consent is implied and need not be written where a contractually obliged third party settles without any contribution from the client.
