Make non-sensitive data open by default as the Data and Digital Government Strategy requires, while complying with the laws and the privacy, security and ethical controls for sharing sensitive data; for data holdings kept by the agency or by third parties, consider an internal and a public list of key data assets, with a description of what each contains, whether it is legally shareable and a contact for access requests, publishing non-sensitive or anonymised data where possible; document holdings by collecting metadata in line with the Australian Government Recordkeeping Metadata Standard, making currency clear (timestamp, source, collection method, update frequency), keeping Indigenous data accessible and findable and publishing it in line with the Framework for Governance of Indigenous Data, and improving cataloguing on DataHub; share information about holdings externally where there is a business need and it is legal, safe and ethical, for example through the Australian Government Data Catalogue.
