An SMSF's governing rules are read as holding covenants by each trustee: to act honestly; to exercise the care, skill and diligence of an ordinary prudent person dealing with another's property while feeling morally bound to provide for them; to act in beneficiaries' best financial interests (including payments to third parties); to keep the fund's money and assets separate from the trustee's own and from a standard employer-sponsor's or its associate's; not to hinder the trustee's own functions; to set, keep reviewing and follow an investment strategy that weighs risk, return, diversification, liquidity and the capacity to meet liabilities; where reserves exist, to manage them under a prudential strategy; and to allow a beneficiary access to prescribed information or documents (s 52B(1)-(2)).
