General Practice Standard 5 Practice facilities – Australia RACGP Standards for General Practices (5th edition)

Australia RACGP Standards for General Practices (5th edition) GP5.1: Practice facilities: the premises are fit for purpose; every face-to-face consultation happens in a dedicated consultation or examination space that protects privacy and confidentiality; the waiting area accommodates the usual number of people; toilets and hand-cleaning facilities are available; and the practice is visibly clean

What does GP5.1 require?

The physical setting is part of safe care. The practice's facilities suit the services it provides, with adequate lighting, ventilation, temperature control, security and maintenance. Face-to-face consultations take place in a room or dedicated space, not a corridor or office, where the patient cannot be seen or overheard and can be examined with dignity, with a screen or curtain and a chaperone available. The waiting area is large enough for the people normally present, including prams and mobility aids, and offers appropriate seating. Patients have access to a toilet and to hand-cleaning facilities. The premises are visibly clean, with a cleaning schedule for clinical and public areas.
