Australia OGTR Guidelines for Certification of a PC2 Aquatic Facility (Version 3.1) A8: Drainage exits screened or effluent treated

What does A8 require?

Any drainage exits, hand basins included, have to be fitted either with barriers (screens, for example) able to stop GMOs and GM reproductive material escaping, or with a means of treating all effluent chemically or by heat to decontaminate it before it is discharged. The guideline notes the facility may be built so that drainage exit effluent and other liquid effluent pass through the same filtration or decontamination system. It also states that releasing effluent that has been neither filtered nor decontaminated into municipal sewers is not allowed, and must never happen for species that could survive the trip through the sewer and treatment plants.
