Walls separating dwellings must provide airborne sound insulation with a weighted standardised level difference with spectrum adaptation term (DnT,w + Ctr) of at least 45. Walls separating a bathroom, sanitary compartment, laundry or kitchen in one dwelling from a habitable room (other than a kitchen) in the adjoining dwelling must insulate against impact sound enough to prevent illness or loss of amenity. Pipes and other service penetrations must not compromise the required insulation. Verification Method H4V4 measures DnT,w + Ctr of at least 45 in situ under AS/NZS ISO 717.1. Deemed-to-Satisfy route: H4D8, sound insulation to Housing Provisions Part 10.7 (tested or listed wall systems, discontinuous construction for impact sound, and service penetration details). The Northern Territory replaces H4P6 with a qualitative airborne and impact requirement and leaves H4V4 blank.
