Where workers in regional and remote areas are housed (for example fruit-pickers, shearers or remote construction workers) and the PCBU owns or manages the accommodation, it must so far as reasonably practicable maintain the premises so the occupant is not exposed to physical or psychosocial risks (WHS Act s 19(4)). Accommodation should be separated from workplace hazards, lockable with safe entry and exit, structurally stable, meet electrical and fire safety standards, have drinking water, toilets, washing and laundry, regular cleaning and rubbish collection, sleeping quarters shielded from noise and vibration, eating facilities, lighting, heating, cooling and ventilation, storage and furniture, a refrigerator or cool room, and fittings in good condition.
