Section 4: Guidance for specific types of work – Australia Model Code of Practice: Managing the Work Environment and Facilities

Australia Model Code of Practice: Managing the Work Environment and Facilities 4.1: 4.1 Give outdoor workers shelter and sun protection

Outdoor workers should have access to shelter for meals, breaks and adverse weather, such as sheds, caravans, tents, windbreaks or portable shade, with vehicles or public facilities sufficing for short-term shelter. Where a risk cannot be eliminated, other steps must minimise it, including suitable PPE. Protection from solar ultraviolet radiation should be provided, for example by reorganising work so that outdoor tasks are done in shade or alternative tasks when the sun is most intense (10 am to 2 pm, or 11 am to 3 pm in daylight saving time) and supplying a wide-brim hat, long-sleeved collared shirt, long pants, sunglasses and sunscreen.
